About us

The First

The Falklands War Mapping Project (FWMP) delivers the first intensive archaeological survey of the battlefields of the Falkland conflict. Forty years after the events of 1982, the Project provides a detailed assessment of the character, location, and condition of structural features and artefacts.

To Record

Since the end of the Falklands campaign, the material remains of the conflict have been much denuded through relic collection, decay from long-term exposure to the climate, infrastructural development, building projects, and natural processes of landscape change.

With Others

The Project intends to systematically record the material remains that exist on various battlefields. The first season of fieldwork focussed on Mount Tumbledown (March-April 2022).

A central element of the project is outreach activities.

To Understand

The Project develops understandings of the role played by conflict heritage – and of landscapes, finds, and past events – in the recall of personal and social memories. This part of the research draws on the experiences and insights of, amongst others, Falkland Islanders and veterans of the campaign.
