Community & Outreach

The Falklands War Mapping Project is first and foremost a community project. As such, we have enjoyed delivering a number of outreach and community activities.

The Project has held “open house” events at the Historic Dockyard Museum to answer questions from, and speak to, islanders. We enjoyed hosting volunteer days during the fieldwork on Mount Tumbledown where many locals came and participated in assorted survey activities. The Project has also appreciated the opportunity to hear from many locals about their experiences of 1982 and the associated material legacy. We are very appreciative of all the volunteers for their inputs.

The Project team has also been working with the Falkland Islands Museum & National Trust to build capacity. This strand of Project work has included advising on the protection and recording of heritage sites and specialist training on various survey technologies.

Whilst in the Falkland Islands, Doug, Tim and Beth ran a series of ‘art and archaeology’ sessions for various school and youth groups. These included: Falkland Island Community School; Junior School and Camp Education; and ‘Past Finders’ at the Historic Dockyard Museum. The team were really impressed by the enthusiasm of participants and quality of their artworks. Given our Project’s focus on the events of 1982, it is very fitting that some of this artwork is to be showcased in the Susan Whitley Memorial Exhibition in June 2022. (This exhibition is held every year in memory of the former art teacher who was one of three civilians that lost their lives in the Falklands War). Thanks are owed to Dorinda Rowlands, Charlotte Fenwick, and Sandra Alazia for facilitating the delivery of these sessions.
